DO look in the vintage, 60's-70's, and 80's-90's sections. Fashion goes in cycles, and there's no better way to channel an era than with the actual clothing made in that era. For example, pick out a vintage skirt, a pair of shorts, or a dress and wear it with a top or shoes that's already in your closet. Plus, a piece of vintage clothing adds effortless cool to any look.
DON'T miss the birdbath filled with scarves, because it's sort of hidden in the corner. Scarves are a great way to mix up an old outfit or add a splash of color to a drab one.
DO go to the shoe section. It might seem weird to buy second-hand shoes, but most of the ones they actually put out for sale are in very good shape. I found a pair of Madewell sandals from last year's spring collection that were barely worn for only $7.00! There are espadrilles, flats, and lots of dressy shoes, with some from big names like Salvatore Ferragamo and Stuart Weitzman. They also have 8 bajillion vintage cowboy boots...not sure why. But if you're looking for an authentic pair, this is the place to get them cheap.
DON'T be intimated or grossed out by the dollar-a-pound section. You WILL have to dig through piles of clothes, and yes, they are all on the floor. But the best deals come from there! Think about it... $1.50 for a pound of clothes every day except for on fridays, when it's only $1.00 per pound. And how much do most clothes weight? Not a lot. It's like getting free clothes. There are lots and lots of jeans and t-shirts but there are also random things that can be really edgy. For example, last time I went I got a worn-in gray Calvin Klein t-shirt with rips and all these wonderful little holes like the kind of thing you'd find at LF but real-er if that makes any sense. I also found a lace top and a sheer floral dress that I plan on altering (Which reminds me, if you're into clothing design like I am, but can't afford to buy new fabric or are environmentally conscious and want re-design old clothes, this is THE PLACE to get material). And it all cost me... $2.30.
DON'T be turned off by the "contemporary" clothing. In my opinion, this is the weakest part of their store. Some of these clothes are new, but they're just cheap and tacky, without the appeal of vintage clothing.
DO check out the t-shirt bin in the doorway by the 60'-70's vintage section. This large bin is filled with lots and lots of t-shirts... college t-shirts, random graphic tees, souvenir shirts, all kinds of t-shirts. And they're only $1.00 each.
And lastly, DON'T be that kid that goes with her friends just to laugh at the ridiculousness of the clothes and to try on all the sunglasses. I've been that kid, and the proof is on Facebook. But when seriously shopping, that kid is so obnoxious. So don't be that kid.
That's it. Happy Thrifting!
